In the end, even though I'd read somewhere that they were buggy, I thought I'd try the drivers by downloading bit Access run-time. It installed without a problem and the driver works like a dream with our software. Hopefully I won't encounter any bugs that aren't covered by updates.
The simplest solution is to create two VMs, one with only bit components and one with only bit components. Yes, the simplest approach is to use a VM to totally isolate the installations. But that has its disadvantages too.
